Splashing a barge is a pick with a moving target underneath it. The water does not hold still, and the load gets heavier the day it comes back out.
Going in is the straightforward half, right up until it is not. The machine has to sit on ground that will hold it at full radius, the swing has to clear the bulkhead or the ramp, and the hull has to come down level so it takes the water flat instead of on a corner.
Coming out is the half that catches people. A barge that went in clean comes back out with water in the compartments, growth on the bottom and mud on the spuds, and none of that was on the weight ticket. We size the pick for what comes out rather than for what went in, and you will hear that on the phone rather than with the load in the air.
Tide, wind and where the truck can actually park decide the day more than the barge does. Launch or ramp, what the ground is like behind it, how much room there is to swing, and what time the water is where we need it. That is a conversation before we roll, not a discovery when we get there.
